As a descendant of Robert Potter, friend and fellow indicted co-conspirator of Samuel Gorton, I am naturally greatly interested in the history of what he did. Robert's name here is mostly mentioned as among several others in league with Gorton, from the purchasing of lands and the co-founding of Warwick RI, to the arrest, trials and sentences by the Massachusetts Puritanism, but it does mention how Robert's wife was starved and frozen in a siege and getaway from Samuel's enemies. They also were persecuted by Benedict Arnold, great-grandfather of the famous traitor, who in turn, I think, also caused trouble for Israel Potter, which looks like a little family feud had taken place in my family's history (I'm willing to forgive the Arnold family for any hostilities, though: I think several of them married into my family).
Samuel Gorton, along with Roger Williams, founder of Providence, fought the good fight for religious liberty, which was what the founding or Rhode Island was all about. In this case it was against the Puritan establishment of Massachusetts, those humorless, paranoid witch-burners that considered themselves the top dogs of the True Believers in the new world. Samuel was a persistent thorn in their side so they hunted him down and brought him and his friends, like Robert Potter, to trial. I have not read this whole thing yet, ironically enough, considering it's family history, but I hope to sometime. It is a great history of one of the great New England states.
Only about the first nine percent of this book (on kindle) is about history and biography; the rest is a genealogy of the Gorton family.

The Life And Times Of Samuel Gorton Adelos Gorton 9781163083321 Books Reviews

got it for my wife.......she found it helpful for her genealogy
Good price. Have the pdf file version, but wanted a printed copy for a gift. Was quite disappointed to find various pages marked...with outlined words and phrases. Also, all of the genealogy related pages were missing.
For anyone who is a descendant of Samuel Gorton, or knows someone who is a descendant, this book is definitely one to check out. The font is a bit difficult to read because this is basically a photo copy of the original published in 1907. So the pages are a bit shrunken as though the book were placed on a copier machine at 80% size. I would have preferred that the cover be laminated as the soft cover retains finger prints. Nonetheless, I think the book is a good value and makes this historic information accessible to persons of the modern era.
I just received this today so I haven't read it yet. The review will be on the book itself rather than the contents of the pages. This is a fairly nice hardcover bound book. The spine seems a little loose, but there were no loose pages. The book was made by scanning an original copy of "The Life and Times of Samuel Gorton." This means that any writing on that book is in this one. Mainly, there is a lot of underling, asterisks, and other lines throughout the book. I did also find a page or two that is unreadable. It's hard to say if that illegibility comes from the original copy or from when they copied it to create this book.

That being said, if you're in the market for this book, it's a good buy (just keep an eye out on the price as it fluctuates a lot). I would recommend getting it. Just know there are a few flaws, but they generally are reproduced flaws from the original copy that whoever put this particular one together could not have removed unless they retyped the entire book.
