Prior to this novel I have only read some of Compton MacKenzie's later works such as "Whisky Galore!". I was rather expecting that this one, from 1915, would be similar in more respects than it was. First, the pace of this is quite leisurely; more modern authors would have used the amount of material covered in this novel in a short story, rather than 388 pages. As I said I expected that the novel would be full of the colorful slightly eccentric characters covered in the later books and some were there (Miss. Varney, Miss Peasley, the gardener and Pauline's parents) but not featured nearly as prominently. The main characters are Guy and Pauline who reminded me very much of David Copperfield and Dora from the Dicken's novel. He is young, very self-centered and convinced he is going to set the world on fire with his slim volume of poetry while Pauline is sweet and very naive to say the least. So naive in fact that she was unable to understand why 20 year old women might be subject to gossip for going to the home of single gentlemen who lived alone. Frankly, innocent or not, that detail struck me as totally unbelievable. Not wishing to spoil the story for others I won't comment about how it ends but I will say that, as the novel progresses Guy becomes more spoiled, more demanding and more manipulative that I found acceptable for a likable protagonist. I'm not sorry I read this book, but if it were the first novel I read by this author, I'm not sure I would seek out another.

I had heard great things about this author and was disappointed with every book I read and I tried quite a few.
written in a very archaic style, this book didn't hold my interest past the first 20 pages. Maybe try another by the author?
Compton MacKenzie was a true writer. Wonderfully descriptive and beautiful vocabulary. This story reflects in details the development of a relationship and Mr. MacKenzie showed amazing insight.
